I’ve worked as an independent consultant / contractor and full time employee at a few companies in the Silicon Valley. One of the clear distinctions that I’ve noticed is the expectations between the two roles. Contractors are usually responsible for output. Full time employees are usually responsible for outcome. The main difference is this: In the software industry everyone is trying to launch their idea into the market as soon as possible. There is a launch cadence frequency that is special about Silicon Valley.

What about landing?

So you’ve launched your app, but now that you’re in the air - have you thought about landing it? Meaning, how is the app received by your target audience. As a full time employee, there are a lot more important things to consider than just launching. For example, now that the app is launched, how do you measure the impact that it’s had on your target user base? What is the churn rate and how can we reduce the churn on our app? Etc. As a contractor you can increase your chances of standing out by inserting yourself into these discussions with middle and upper management. Also, keeping a log of your efforts and how they align with the business overall objective. What do you guys think? Have you converted from an intern, contractor, consultant to a full time employee in the past? I’m curious to know your thoughts. Cheers!
